  1. Start with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step to the right with your right foot, bending your knees slightly.
  3. Bring your left foot to meet your right foot.

March in Place

A great warm-up and a common element in Zumba choreography. Focus on lifting your knees and engaging your core.

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Lift your right knee towards your chest, as if marching.
  3. Lower your right foot and lift your left knee towards your chest.
  4. Continue alternating knees, keeping a steady rhythm.
  5. Add arm movements – swing your arms naturally as you march.

Salsa Step

This step introduces a bit more Latin flavor! It’s a three-count step that mimics the basic salsa movement.

  1. Start with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step forward with your left foot. (Count 1)
  3. Step in place with your right foot. (Count 2)
  4. Step in place with your left foot. (Count 3)
  5. Repeat, stepping forward with your right foot on the next sequence.
  6. Add hip movement to enhance the salsa feel.

Hip Sway (Merengue)

This is all about isolating your hip movement. Keep your upper body relatively still.

  1. Stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart, knees slightly bent.
  2. Shift your weight to your right side, pushing your right hip out.
  3. Shift your weight to your left side, pushing your left hip out.
  4. Continue alternating sides, keeping a fluid, swaying motion.
  5. Add arm movements – you can swing them naturally or hold them out to the sides.

Putting it Together: A Simple Routine

Now that you’ve learned the basic steps, let’s combine them into a short routine:

  1. March in Place (30 seconds)
  2. Basic Step (30 seconds)
  3. Salsa Step (30 seconds)
  4. Hip Sway (30 seconds)
  5. Repeat the entire sequence 2-3 times.

Tips for Success

  • Start Slow: Don’t try to do too much too soon. Focus on mastering the steps before increasing the speed.
  • Mirror Practice: Practice in front of a mirror to check your form.
  • Have Fun! Zumba is about enjoying yourself. Don’t be afraid to let loose and move to the music.
  • Watch Zumba Videos: Search for beginner Zumba videos on YouTube for visual guidance.

Keep practicing, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you pick up the moves! Enjoy your Zumba journey!
